He has been gone for 10 years now. Today, our son is almost a man and I feel he is happy. We moved from Paris to a city on the ocean where I can breathe. My familial job is done and I can get back to work. This series is me rediscovering my artistic life.”

Kristen Liu-Wong’s new series Let the Mirror Move First:

Kristen Liu-Wong’s newest series is an exploration of the self and the opposing motivations at work within each of us. Liu-Wong says that “over this long period of isolation, I’ve been forced to turn inwards almost unendingly with little to distract me, and in doing so, I became intrigued by the discrepancies that often exist between the idea of self and the reality of self. It can sometimes be difficult for us to look in the proverbial mirror, especially when what we see doesn’t match up with what we expect to see. In these paintings, mysterious masked ghosts, scowling reflections, and repeating figures are used as visual motifs to embody all of the conflicting aspects that make up a person.

Messy Desk’s new series Messy Desk's Friends in Wonderland:

Jane Lee, aka Messy Desk, creates pieces that are full of joy, with her characters, animals, and happy faces interwoven between buildings. The pieces are carefully crafted, stroke after stroke, and the result is high-density landscapes with an explosion of color. Frantic as it might be at first glance, after close inspection, Messy Desk’s art is full of emotional stories, like treasures hidden in plain sight, waiting to be discovered.

About ONEQ’s new series Uzume:

Okinawa-based ONEQ is a self-taught artist who creates modern pin-up illustrations influenced by her youth spent on a secluded Japanese island, where she would spend her days dreaming of aquatic adventures and reading countless comics at a neighbor's home. Regarding her newest series, the artist shares: “Uzume is the goddess of performing arts that appears in Japanese mythology and is also the oldest dancer in Japan…I was fascinated and inspired by her unique solution to things that combined her dynamic, wild and feminine intellect.”

Corey Helford Gallery is located at 571 S. Using his works as a form of social and political activism, Stanley hopes to use his art to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves.

Regarding his new series, Stanley says, “My art is born out of the zeal for perfection both in skill, expression, and devotion to create positive changes in the world. I draw inspiration from life experiences and basically everything that sparks a feeling of necessity. I find myself spending countless hours working on an artwork to stimulate deep and strong emotions, in order to connect more intimately with my viewers. Most times, it’s almost like I lose control of my pencils and the art flows through me to the paper. I work with my Principle of the Three P's: Patience, Practice, and Persistence. His impact on the Pop-Surrealist movement is widely recognized.

As Brooks explains, “Besides female characters being the eternal protagonist in my work, another central component has always been the dazzling glamour and grandeur of Old Hollywood. From the world-weary vamps of the Silent Era to the elegant clotheshorses of the 1930s, to the square-shouldered career woman of wartime women’s pictures, these personas monopolized my imagination. I picked up a rabid interest in classic cinema at a very early age, spending hours in the local library sketching ghostly actresses from classic cinema photography books. The first old film I remember seeing at 4 years old was Whatever Happened To Baby Jane, a gothic tragedy that haunted me with its twisted decayed glamour. It would ultimately have an enormous impact on my creative tone.”

The exhibit is on view through September 26, 2020. After developing an interest in sculpting in college, she decided to pursue her art and bring her creations to life. Inspired by her childhood, fashion, film, and nature, Yu creates colorful and detailed sculptures using epoxy clay. Her figurines are sculpted into mysterious creatures that are ornate, lifelike, and personally meaningful.

Yu’s newest series, A Journey, is a fantasy world centered around the artist’s own rumination on childhood and a celebration of growth. She explains, “The world was smaller and brighter when I was younger, and I want to capture that with my art.

“In 2016, I graduated from art school and the same year, I made the biggest and scariest but yet, the best decision of my life - to become a freelance artist. For the first time of my life, I felt like I was following my heart and doing something for myself. I think I have found my calling. Gradually, I started developing my own identity in art through sculpting. However, sometimes I feel a little dissociated from my younger self. In the past year, I realized a big part of who I am today has a lot to do with my youth growing up in China.”

According to Yu, the characters she created for the show are based on her family, friends, childhood imagination, and things she loved as a child. The animal characters in the show have some correlation with her previous mini solo show, Animal World. Yu created a series of zombie animal characters who died from abuse and then returned as zombies to seek revenge on those who had made them suffer. For this show, the artist has recreated animal characters with new identities.

COREY HELFORD GALLERY

571 S. I’ve always had a strong attachment to Pop. When I first engaged with the work of Warhol, Kruger, Johns, Haring and others, I was struck by how these artists could take seemingly superficial imagery and re-contextualize it in a way that made me think and feel so deeply. Pop gave the power back to the artist, wresting the determination of what qualifies as art away from collectors and curators who eventually came to follow the artists’ lead on the subject. Pop turned ideas into art. It demanded attention by asking questions like, ‘If art is everywhere, what is art?’ The answer, Pop suggested to me, was ‘You decide.’ As an artist, that opened a whole world to me.

Lately, I’ve found myself wanting to reengage with the aspects of Pop Art that drew me to the movement in the first place: Pop as the replication/re-contextualization of images, Pop as portraiture, Pop as protest, Pop as celebration. This is a show about ideas firing fast and direct from many angles. Yet every piece in the show will have at least one piece in direct conversation."

The exhibit is on view through July 3 at Corey Helford Gallery (Los Angeles).

About DOSSHAUS:

DOSSHAUS is an art collective founded in 2011 and the current nom de guerre of David Connelly. Created in response to a society saturated with social media-generated images in which reality itself seems all the more relative, DOSSAHAUS uses recycled cardboard, paper, and acrylic to create its own highly idealized universe. This cardboard world is at once separate from and a product of modern culture.

DOSSHAUS have taken part in more than 20 group art exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York and Miami; they staged their first solo exhibition at Gregorio Escalante Gallery in Los Angeles (February 2016); followed by their second major solo show in L.A. at Corey Helford Gallery (April 2018), entitled Paper-Thin Hotel, an immersive, multi-room exhibit of cardboard sculptures centered around the theme of the American Dream.

DOSSHAUS has often paid homage to the music that influences their art. In advance of the Paper-Thin Hotel exhibition, DOSSHAUS released a double 7” single (2017) by the same name (“Paper-Thin Hotel”), in collaboration with Sympathy for the Record Industry. The limited-edition single release examines the role of visual art in music and has the distinction of being the first officially released record to be made entirely of cardboard.

DOSSHAUS received the award for Outdoor Sculpture at the 2018 Lucca Biennale in Lucca, Italy, and have been featured in Juxtapoz, Hi-Fructose, ELLE, VICE, and on the cover of LA Weekly, as well as in Lori Zimmer's 2015 anthology, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Art-Cardboard-Creativity-Collaboration-Storytelling/dp/1631590278/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1439399442&sr=8-1&keywords=the+art+of+cardboard" style="color:blue; The artist creates colored visions of animals that are made of materials, as if woven out of thread and decorative fabrics. Building on contrast, they are full of life, energy, and fantasy, always idealized in their complicated nature and continuous transformation. In her art, the artist uses intensely saturated colors, which illustrate the vibrancy of the world her characters inhabit.

Happiness is Easy is a continuation of Prończuk-Kuziak’s True Colors show and is composed of 17 new oil paintings depicting short stories and reality snapshots which all have one thing in common: happiness.

According to Prończuk-Kuziak, “With time, I saw that True Colors was all about hope: hope for luck and inner peace …. The newest series of my works describe happiness and finding it in perverse ways. Happiness is a very subjective concept and on the individual level, is often extremely difficult to reach despite being the most important and crucial need for all mankind. People can try to reach it for all their lives and find it in the most unexpected or strange places, situations, people, or moments.

Ewa Prończuk-Kuziak is a Polish contemporary artist who lives and works in Warsaw. She studied Polish Philology at the Warsaw University, Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp, Belgium) and Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts (Warsaw, Poland) where she obtained an MFA in Painting. Ewa’s oil paintings are a combination of still life, nature and fantasy. Building on contrast, her artworks are full of life, energy, and fantasy, always idealized in their complicated nature and continuous transformation. In her works, Ewa uses intensely saturated colors, which illustrate the vibrancy of the world her characters inhabit.

Happiness is Easy premiered on April 18th, alongside a group show, entitled Fantastical Beasts, and a solo show from Yoko d'Holbachie, entitled Flowers.

Corey Helford Gallery is located at 571 S.
